The federal administration has announced a significant new travel regulation aimed at bolstering security within the capital city. Starting from January 1, 2026, vehicles without a valid M-Tag will be strictly prohibited from entering Islamabad. This decision comes directly from the instructions of Federal Minister for Interior Mohsin Naqvi to ensure smoother and safer traffic management. The administration has installed advanced tag readers at various entry points and checkpoints to automatically identify non-compliant vehicles once the deadline passes.

To facilitate citizens, the Deputy Commissioner of Islamabad has established sixteen dedicated registration centers across the city to expedite the process. Since mid-November, nearly one hundred thousand vehicles have already secured their tags. The M-Tag is a radio frequency identification sticker that allows for automated toll payments, eliminating the need for long queues at toll plazas. Authorities have warned that strict legal action will be taken against violators after the deadline. Currently, the issuance fee is set at a nominal amount of Rs 250, and citizens are strongly advised to visit the nearest facilitation point immediately. This measure not only enhances security but also aligns with broader initiatives to digitize travel and discourage cash payments on national motorways.
