The dream of owning a home has become a reality for thousands of families in Punjab as PML-N President Nawaz Sharif officially inaugurated the "Apni Zameen, Apna Ghar" housing project. Accompanied by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, the inauguration featured the first-ever digital ballot to ensure a transparent and fair distribution of residential plots. This initiative is being hailed as a major milestone for the provincial government, focusing on providing a roof over the heads of those who have struggled to afford their own property in an increasingly expensive real estate market.
Under this scheme, lucky winners of three-marla plots have not only secured land but are also eligible for a financial boost. The government has announced a loan of Rs1.5 million for each recipient to help them construct their homes. The repayment plan has been designed to be incredibly pocket-friendly, with easy monthly installments of just Rs14,000 spread over a period of nine years. This structured support ensures that the transition from being a tenant to a homeowner is smooth and sustainable for low-income families.
The scale of the project is impressive, covering 23 housing schemes across 19 districts of Punjab. In the first phase alone, thousands of applicants from districts like Jhelum, Kasur, Faisalabad, and Lodhran have secured their plots. The Chief Minister emphasized that this project is a testament to the government fulfilling its promises rather than relying on empty slogans. The massive interest in the plan is evident from the fact that over 483,000 people registered for the project, with more than 257,000 applications received for the initial phase.
To maintain transparency, all applications underwent a rigorous verification process through NADRA and various district committees. This careful scrutiny ensured that only eligible individuals participated in the balloting. As the project moves forward, it is expected to bring a significant change to the lives of many, providing security and a sense of belonging to those who previously felt left behind. By combining land allocation with construction loans, the Punjab government is setting a new standard for social welfare and urban development in the province.
