KARACHI — August 28, 2026 — Karachi Police officially registered a case against nearly 100 demonstrators following a late-night protest that completely paralyzed traffic along Sharea Faisal, the city's main arterial highway. The ongoing public unrest stems from the high-profile murder investigation of 25-year-old local entrepreneur Mir Raza Ali.
Escalation at Nursery Stop and Police Action
The First Information Report (FIR) was lodged after protesters carrying placards and banners blocked the main corridor leading from Saddar toward Jinnah International Airport.
Police officials stated that negotiators attempted to disperse the crowd peacefully to restore traffic flow. However, after demonstrators refused to clear the artery, law enforcement registered charges against 20 named individuals and 80 unidentified participants for unlawful assembly and obstruction of public thoroughfares.
Judicial Commission Commences Probe
The police action comes as a single-member judicial commission formally launched independent proceedings to re-examine the circumstances surrounding Ali’s death.
The Investigation: Ali was reported missing before his body was recovered in Gulistan-e-Johar. A secondary post-mortem confirmed the family’s assertion of murder, leading to public outrage over initial investigative missteps.
Commission Proceedings: The judicial commission has summoned police investigators, medical officers, and eyewitnesses to determine full legal accountability and address public concerns over police handling of the case.
