Pakistan has taken a major step forward in technology as engineers at NED University of Engineering and Technology successfully completed the test drive of the country’s first driverless car. Developed using artificial intelligence, the autonomous vehicle was seen moving smoothly on the NED University campus in Karachi, impressing students, faculty, and visitors. This achievement highlights Pakistan’s growing strength in innovation and advanced research.

The project was developed at the National Center for Artificial Intelligence within NED University’s Department of Computer and Information Sciences. Work on the driverless car began one year ago, during which a China-imported electric vehicle was transformed into an AI-powered autonomous car. The system uses artificial intelligence, robotics, mapping, sensors, radar technology, and computer vision to operate independently.

According to Dr. Muhammad Khurram, Director of the National Center for Artificial Intelligence, the team is currently conducting controlled trials and road tests. The vehicle’s speed is limited between 15 and 20 kilometers per hour, and the system includes turning control, traffic judgment, and lane recognition. Engineers are also working on object detection, speed limit identification, and traffic signal recognition to achieve full autonomy.

Team member Inzimam Khan stated that the vehicle is designed to handle Pakistan’s complex and unstructured traffic environment. The successful test drive marks an important milestone for Pakistan’s technology sector and opens new possibilities for smart transportation in the future.
