Pakistan is gearing up to launch its own secure messaging platform, BEEP, which will replace WhatsApp for official use by government employees. Modeled after China's WeChat, the app is expected to provide a secure and efficient communication tool for public-sector workers. The National Information Technology Board (NITB) confirmed that BEEP will be rolled out by June 30, 2026, with a phased implementation beginning in federal ministries and attached departments.
BEEP is designed to offer robust security features, including end-to-end encryption for text messages and video calls. This comes in response to concerns over the security of official communications on platforms like WhatsApp, which stores data on foreign servers. Unlike WhatsApp, BEEP will host its data servers in Pakistan, ensuring full control over sensitive government communications.
The app will also be integrated with Pakistan’s federal e-Office system to enhance workflow coordination and streamline document sharing within government institutions. While the app’s development is intended to reduce risks associated with operational communication, it is also planned to be financially self-sustaining, operating on a usage-based fee model.
BEEP’s launch is expected to bolster internal coordination within Pakistan’s government, ensuring secure and reliable communication across state institutions. This move is part of a broader initiative to digitize government operations and reduce paperwork.
