Why cleaning is not always enough: metadata is one signal of several. Meta, Google and TikTok also run classifiers over the pixels themselves, and invisible watermarks such as SynthID survive cropping and re-compression. Cleaning the metadata removes the deterministic record, but a pixel-level classifier may still flag a truly AI-generated image. For a genuine photograph that picked up a label by mistake, cleaning is the correct fix.

An AI label is not something a platform decides to add to your picture. It is something your file asks for. Somewhere inside the image there is a record saying how it was made, and Facebook, Instagram and Google read that record before anyone looks at a single pixel. Remove the cause and the label goes; delete the record and you have only made the file mute.
That is why the honest answer to “how do I remove the AI label” has two branches. If the photograph is yours and an editor wrote the record, appeal the label and it gets corrected. If you have not posted yet, export again without the AI-assisted step. Both are covered in the steps above. What follows explains what the record actually is, so you can tell which situation you are in.
What an AI Image Metadata Checker Reads
Every image file is two things at once: the picture, and a set of records describing where the picture came from. Those records are what Facebook, Instagram, Google and TinEye consult before anyone looks at a single pixel, and they are why two visually identical images can be treated completely differently on upload. This checker opens the second half of the file and shows it to you in plain language.
Three separate records decide how an image is treated:
- C2PA Content Credentials — a cryptographically signed manifest recording what created the image and what has been done to it since. Adobe, Microsoft, Google, OpenAI and camera makers including Leica and Sony are all signatories.
- IPTC DigitalSourceType — one short field inside the XMP packet stating whether the image was captured, generated, or some mixture of the two.
- EXIF — the camera-written block holding make, model, lens, serial number, timestamps and, if location services were on, your GPS coordinates.

Why genuine photographs get labelled as AI
This is the single most common reason people go looking for a metadata checker, and the answer is nearly always the same. The photograph is real. The label is real too — it was written by the editor, not by the platform.
When you use generative fill to remove a stray tourist, let an app replace a dull sky, or run an AI denoise pass on a high-ISO frame, the software records that an AI feature touched the file. It writes compositeWithTrainedAlgorithmicMedia into the XMP packet, or attaches a C2PA manifest naming itself. Meta reads that field and applies the label. Every step behaved exactly as designed; the outcome still misrepresents a photograph you took yourself. Meta acknowledged the problem in 2024 by renaming the label from “Made with AI” to the softer “AI info”, but the underlying trigger did not change.
Run the file through the checker and the verdict panel will name the responsible field directly, so you know whether you are looking at a genuine AI declaration or an editing artefact.
What to do if your real photo was mislabelled
Appeal it. Both Facebook and Instagram let you dispute an AI label from the post itself: open the post, tap the AI info label, and use the option that tells Meta the label is wrong. That is the route that gets the record corrected, and it is the only one that leaves your file honest.
If you want to avoid the label on future work, the fix is upstream: export from a tool that has not applied a generative feature, or turn off the AI-assisted options in your editor before the final export. Some editors also expose a Content Credentials toggle in their export dialogue.
Why this tool will not strip AI provenance
Tools that promise to erase an AI label are answering the wrong question. Stripping a provenance record does not make an image a photograph; it only removes the file’s ability to describe itself, which is the thing that lets viewers, journalists and fact-checkers tell synthetic media apart from the real thing. Weekly Pakistan is not going to build that.
It also does not work as advertised. Meta, Google and TikTok all run their own classifiers over the pixels, entirely independently of the metadata, and pixel-level watermarks such as SynthID survive cropping, compression and re-encoding. A file with its metadata scrubbed is a file that has lost its provenance without gaining any reliable disguise.
EXIF, privacy, and what the strip button does
Removing EXIF is a different matter, and a legitimate one. EXIF routinely carries the precise coordinates where a photo was taken, the moment it was taken, the phone or camera that took it and, on many bodies, a serial number that links every photo you have ever published to the same device. Posting an unstripped photo to a marketplace listing or a public forum can disclose your home address.
The strip button here removes the EXIF block and nothing else. The pixels are untouched — the file is rebuilt at the container level rather than re-encoded, so there is no quality loss at all — and the XMP packet and any C2PA manifest are preserved. Because the file’s bytes change, a C2PA signature will subsequently validate as modified rather than intact, so keep your original alongside the stripped copy.
A metadata check is not a verdict on authenticity
Worth being blunt about the limits. Screenshots carry no metadata. Images downloaded from most social platforms have already been stripped on upload. A re-encode through almost any messaging app discards the lot. So an empty result tells you only that this copy of the file makes no claim about itself — not that the image is genuine, and not that it is fake. Treat the metadata as one piece of evidence among several, alongside reverse image search and the ordinary journalistic business of asking where a picture came from.

It embeds a signed manifest inside the image recording what created it and what was done to it since. Think of it as a tamper-evident nutrition label for a picture. Cameras such as the Leica M11-P and Sony Alpha bodies can sign genuine captures with it, and most major generative models attach one to their output.
