Pakistan’s education authorities have approved a major policy change that allows Matric Arts and Humanities students to pursue science-related studies at the intermediate level. Under the new decision, Arts students will now be eligible to seek admission in Pre-Medical, Pre-Engineering, Computer Science (ICS), and other science groups. This step is being widely described as a landmark reform in Pakistan’s education system.

The decision was taken during a meeting of the Inter-Board Coordination Commission and will be implemented from the first annual Secondary School Certificate examinations of 2026. According to an official notification issued by IBCC Director Dr. Shahzad Ali Gill, the policy was finalised after consultations with key stakeholders including the Pakistan Engineering Council, Pakistan Medical and Dental Council, and the Higher Education Commission. Their recommendations played an important role in shaping this inclusive academic pathway.

Education officials believe this move will create new opportunities for thousands of students who previously had limited options due to their subject selection at the matric level. By allowing Arts students to transition into science streams, the policy promotes flexibility, skill development, and equal access to professional education.

The announcement comes alongside another update, as authorities confirmed that matric and intermediate examinations in 2026 will be held after Eidul Fitr, providing relief to students during Ramadan.
