The roll number slip is a small document that causes a disproportionate amount of trouble. It is your admit card for the examination hall, it carries the number you will need on result day, and every year a large number of candidates discover a week before their first paper that they do not have one.
What the slip actually contains
Four things, and all four matter:
- Your roll number — required to enter the hall and to check your result afterwards.
- Your registration number — the board's permanent identifier for you across sessions.
- Your examination centre and its address — frequently not the school you study at, and occasionally in a different town.
- The date sheet or paper schedule for your group.
Check the centre address the day you receive the slip, not the night before the paper. Candidates are routinely allotted a centre they have never visited, and working out the journey in advance has saved a lot of people from arriving late to a paper they cannot re-sit.
How regular candidates get their slip
If you are enrolled at a school or college, the board sends roll number slips in bulk to your institution's head, who distributes them before the examination begins. You do not apply for it individually. If the examination is approaching and nothing has arrived, ask the examination clerk at your institution first — slips sit undistributed in school offices more often than they go missing in transit.
How to download the slip online
Most boards publish a downloadable slip, which is the fastest route for private candidates and for anyone whose copy never arrived:
- Open your board's hub page and use the Roll No. Slip quick link, which goes straight to the board's slip section.
- Enter the identifier the board asks for — usually your CNIC or B-Form number, or your registration number. Enter it exactly as it appears on your admission form, including or excluding dashes as the field requires.
- Select the session and class if the form asks.
- Download the PDF and print it. Most centres want a printed copy; a phone screen is not always accepted.
If the lookup returns nothing, the usual causes are a CNIC entered in a different format than the board stored it, a registration number from a previous session, or an admission form that was never processed. The last of those is the serious one, and it needs a call to the board rather than another attempt at the form.
If the slip never arrives
Contact the board directly, with time to spare. Take or quote your CNIC or B-Form, your admission form receipt, and your institution's name and code. Boards issue duplicate slips, but the process takes days rather than minutes, and it is not something to begin the evening before a paper.
Private candidates should be particularly careful here, because there is no institution acting as a safety net. Download the slip as soon as it is published rather than waiting.
Keep it after the examination
The slip's second job begins when the papers end. Your roll number is what every result portal asks for, and the single most common reason students cannot check their result on the day is a slip that was thrown away or left at school. Photograph it the day you receive it. It takes five seconds and removes the problem entirely.
